| Several Wakatipu Basin buildings were among 15 to win prizes at the 2016 Southern Architecture Awards in Queenstown at the weekend. Fourteen new buildings and one older building were announced as the best in the lower South Island at a function attended by about 80 people on Saturday night.
Wanaka architect and jury convener Sarah Ritchie says the winners, chosen from more than 40 entries, are now shortlisted for national honours. Award winners in the Wakatipu Basin were the Remarkables ski area base building, houses in Queenstown, Arrowtown and Lake Hayes, and two homes in Jack’s Point. Selecting the winners had been an “absolute delight”, Ritchie says. Although the architect was a critical component, she says buildings needed exceptional commitment and care from clients, builders and others to be special.
The winners were highly diverse but had in common “care, craftsmanship and attention to the smallest details”.
